As she revealed to  Entertainment Weekly, "It was the first time I had written a song that felt so much like myself that I couldn’t picture anyone else singing it." However she didn't name names, Michaels admitted, "There were definitely a lot of people that wanted that song." The choice to keep it for herself demonstrated astute, as "Issues" went platinum and topped at number 11 on the Announcement Hot 100, notwithstanding hitting the fourth spot on the Standard Best 40. 

Much like Chris Stapleton was a cherished nation lyricist before softening out as an entertainer up his own right, Michaels has penned tracks for a portion of the greatest names in pop.
