Marvel fans launch a petition to bring Iron Man back from the dead

June 5, 2019

We all knew it would eventually come down to this.

Marvel fans (specifically Iron Man fans) launched a petition on Change.org asking the comic book giant to reconsider the death of their beloved hero. Since its launch, almost 18,000 people have signed in support of Tony Stark's revival. "He didn't deserve this and it's not fair, after everything he's been through, and done for everyone, he deserves to live and see his daughter grow up," the petition reads.

The initiative to bring back the billionaire hero highlights his importance to fans, as his character became a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "He's so important. He saved our lives and it's our turn to save him," the web page continues. "We love him so much. We love him 3000. Without him, now, we are totally lost. For many people, he was their reason to live and hold on in life."

The role of Iron Man meant a lot to Robert Downey Jr. himself. The actor, who had struggled with drug addiction for many years, made a significant comeback with the first Iron Man movie. Joe Russo, who co-directed Avengers: Endgame, told Entertainment Weekly, "This role has real significance for him, and it’s a redemptive role for him. These guys bet on him at a time where it was hard to get him insured, and it’s a powerful journey for him."

Despite the massive protest, Marvel's 5-year plan may call for someone else to pick up the role, as the ending to Endgame may have hinted at who the future hero would be. Savvy fans pointed out that, during Mr. Stark's funeral, Harley Keener (the young boy who helped the superhero in Iron Man 3), made an appearance. That, in conjunction with the construction noises heard during the credits, led people to wonder if it is Keener who will pick up where Stark left off.
